In the following position, which is favourable for White, he cannot nevertheless force a win: White: K at Q 7, R at K 8, pawn at K 5, Black: K at his K Kt 2, R at K 8, e.g.: 1 … R—Q R 8 (1 … R—Q 8 ch; would also draw, but more laboriously: 2 K—K 7, R—Q R 8; 3 R—Q 8, R—R 2 ch; 4 K—K 8, R—R 3; 5 R—Q 7 ch, K—Kt 1; 6 K—K 7, K—Kt 2; 7 P—K 6, R—R 8; etc.); 2 R—Q B 8, R—R 2 ch; 3 R—B 7, R—R 1; P—K 6, K—B 3; 5 R—Kt 7, K—Kt 2; 6 K—K 7, R—R 8; 7 R—Q 7, R—R 1; 8 K—Q 6 dis ch, K—B 1; 9 P—K 7 ch, K—K 1; 10 K—K 6, R—R 3 ch; n R—Q 6, R—R 1; 12 R—Kt 6, R—B 1; and as Black has another file at his disposal, he secures the draw. Without it he would be lost.
It is clear that the detail work which applies to end games always has as a foundation some principle of universal application. It is thus easy to understand why in otherwise similar positions the Q P might win where the K P would draw and vice versa, and why against a K P the Rook must operate on the Q side, whilst against a Q P it must remain on the K side.
The reader should now be able to judge the play in examples 63 and 67, why mistakes were made and why other moves were superior.
In Diag. 68 the black Rook is badly placed: it will no doubt work its way to the other wing, but as the hostile Rook already occupies the K R file, the requisite Kt 2 ch; 5 K—K 6, R—Kt 3 ch; 6 K—K 7, R—Kt 2 ch; 7 K—B 6, R—Q 2; 8 K—K 6, R—Kt 2; 9 P—Q 7, and wins. Little would be needed here to give Black a draw; with the white Rook at K Kt 7 instead of K R 7, Black could play his Rook to K R 8. These things are not flights of imagination, nor due to chance: they are logical facts resting on the nature of things.
No. 68. Black to play.
